Coconut
Being Young & Old
Welcome to I See Poetry & Art, a reader-supported newsletter of anything nature.
The Story
It was my last few days in the island before I had to go back to the city to have better comfort during my pregnancy (YES! I’m now in my 26th week, 2nd trimester) 🥰
I had two canvases that I needed to paint on to leave at a cafe/art shop where I do consignment with.
I wanted to paint something that represents the island, but also something unique. As the island is famous for surfing and of course its beautiful beaches, you see so many of these as subjects in shops. I wanted to create something simple but on-point.
So I looked around, and though coconut trees were a common subject, coconuts weren’t. And it so happened that my landlord had someone chopping off a coconut tree up front.
AHA!💡
There I was all giddy to collect sawdust from the chopped wood to make my masterpiece - a painting of a coconut with sawdust as sand.
I realized how both young and old coconuts can be delicious in different ways. One is refreshing and juicy, and the other is strong and crunchy.
And so I realized a meaningful message in relation to life, which brought me to my poem, Coconut.
Coconut
They say it’s greener on the other side
Wouldn’t you agree?
When we’re young as a child we wish to be adults
When we grow old we act wild and free.
But what is the matter?
Isn’t everything just lovely?
Why play with time
when between space there is beauty.
The pure white innocence
filled with fresh curiosity
the tough shell of age
protection and security.
As I dip this brush on the canvas
I paint this moment with ease
playing with all the textures
creating as I please.
