Storm
The True Monster
Welcome to I Sea Poetry & Art, a reader-supported newsletter of anything nature.
The Journey
I live in a country that welcomes almost every deadly natural calamity being in the Pacific, from volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, to typhoons and tsunamis, to landslides and floods.
Last 2021, we experienced the very strong typhoon Odette, destroying thousands of homes and leaving areas with no electricity and limited water supply for months.
Unfortunately the local authorities didn’t do much effort to extend help. Instead, private NGOs and close family and friends were the ones to take the real and effective action and make a difference.
Below is a photo of me a month after the typhoon, holding a painting that a kid gave me during an art activity I conducted with friends for the local kids who were rebuilding their homes with their families.
This experience really made me think about the importance of sustainability, and realize the greed we are victims to.
I am writing this now after encountering two super typhoons in the last two weeks. Yet again, so many people have lost homes and years of hard work because they weren’t protected enough as funds were stolen for greed.
I write this sad (and angry) for the pain and frustration it has caused especially to the innocent and kind hearts.
Storm
What is a storm?
Who is a storm?
Quiet with intentions
they slowly plan their entrance
Just as you’ve built your peace
deceit crawls with ease
A simple life to live
not one that greed would give
can shatter in a day
no thief will ever pay.
Oh souls that crumble in tears
for homes dreamt in years
Can someone change the phase
of a broken human race?

That’s a lovely poem, Astrid. Your poem is subtle, yet it created quite a stir in my mind.
