Subtle Death
How it creeps in
Welcome to I See Poetry & Art, a reader-supported newsletter of anything nature.
The Story
I was caught by artist’s block staring at the torn canvas my dad had given me last Christmas. I wanted to continue my painting momentum, but being in the city, I don’t usually easily get much inspiration.
I decided to do a poll on Instagram asking viewers for what they wanted to see, and this is the overall scene:
Trees on the beach depicting subtle death.
I tried to cover the rip on the canvas with the tree and show a dark sunset depicting the darkening of light and life. And on the tree I put a tiny silhouette of a vulture, subtle death.
Subtle Death
Like a vulture up on a tree
Stealth
It watches closely
Silently
Prey
It’s waiting
patiently
And we are oblivious
sometimes
to its mission
destiny.
Oh destiny, from which we cannot escape.
Be gentle. Though subtle, you soullessly take.
A gift we forget to treasure and hold
This warm setting sun braces for the deadly cold.
